There are two kinds of chronograph buyer, and they rarely admit which one they are. The first actually times things: intervals on a run, a roast in the oven, a parking meter, a presentation. For that buyer, the pushers need to feel positive, the hands need to reset cleanly to zero, and the subdials need to be readable mid stride. The second buyer likes how a chronograph looks, the three subdials, the tachymeter bezel, the sense of a precision instrument, and will start the stopwatch maybe twice a year. Under $200 these two buyers should buy different watches. This guide sorts out which is which.

If you time things: the Casio Edifice

Casio has been making reliable quartz chronographs for longer than most of its competitors, and its steel Edifice line is the one to know. The Casio Edifice Chronograph costs $165 on Casio's US site. It is a 40mm steel case on a steel bracelet with a blue dial, a size that suits most wrists better than the 44mm cases common among sporty chronographs. Everything about it is designed around the function: subdials placed for quick reading, a stopwatch that does what you ask, and a movement from a company whose entire reputation rests on electronics that work.

The trade off is personality. The Edifice looks like a well made sports watch, which is exactly what it is, but it will not turn heads. If you are the first kind of buyer, that does not matter. Buy it.

If you love the look: the Lucky Fours Vantage

The Vantage is a racing chronograph in the purest style: a white dial with black subdials, a black tachymeter bezel and a steel bracelet. That combination comes from the motor racing chronographs of the 1960s, and it is the reason the panda dial is one of the most imitated chronograph designs. At the top of the market a steel racing chronograph with this look starts at about $16,500. The Vantage is $129.99.

The colorways are worth a look. Panda is the classic; Silver Noir is the darker take; a robin egg blue dial and a gold tone version with green are bolder, and the Rootbeer version in brown and gold has a warm, seventies feel. With 8 options there is likely one for any wardrobe. Our racing chronographs guide covers the look in more depth.

Which other chronographs are worth considering under $200?

Lucky Fours Prague: the gold tone integrated chronograph

The Prague at $89.99 is the most unusual chronograph here. Its gold tone case flows into an integrated bracelet, and the dial is a black panda with three white subdials. Gold, an integrated bracelet and a panda dial together make a loud, very seventies watch, and it is meant to be. There are steel and blue versions for anyone who likes the shape but not the gold.

Lucky Fours Tourbillon: the textured dial

Despite its name, the Tourbillon at $99.99 is a quartz watch. What it offers is a blue textured dial with subdials in an integrated bracelet case, the closest thing to a luxury sports chronograph in shape. Buy it for the dial and the case, and ignore the name.

Lucky Fours Chronometer and Zenith: under $100

If you do not need to spend $200, the Chronometer and the Zenith, both $89.99, are excellent chronograph dials for under $100, the first with a white dial and blue bezel ring, the second with a blue panda dial. We cover both in chronographs under $100.

Timex: three honest chronographs

Timex is the other established option. The Timex Weekender Chronograph 40mm at $159 is a relaxed 40mm steel chronograph on fabric with a white dial and Arabic numerals. The Timex Expedition Capstone Chronograph 41mm at $179 has a brushed 41mm tonneau shaped steel case on silicone and is the tougher choice for outdoor use. Just over budget, the Timex Marlin Chronograph Tachymeter 40mm at $219 has a green dial with a racing stripe and a tachymeter, the Timex answer to the Vantage.

Final thoughts

Be honest about which buyer you are. If the stopwatch matters, the Casio Edifice is the best chronograph under $200 and nothing here beats it at its job. If the dial matters, the Vantage is the most convincing racing chronograph at this price. And because the Vantage comes with buy one, get one free and mix and match, you can add a Prague or a Chronometer for nothing extra and still spend less than the Casio. For the wider category, our affordable chronograph guide goes up to $500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, the Casio Edifice or the Lucky Fours Vantage?

The Edifice is the better stopwatch and comes from a brand known for reliable chronographs. The Vantage is the better looking racing chronograph and costs less. Buy the one that matches how you will use it.

What does a tachymeter bezel do?

It converts elapsed time into speed over a known distance. Start the chronograph at a marker, stop it a mile later, and the bezel shows your average speed. Our explainer what is a chronograph walks through it.

Is a quartz chronograph worse than a mechanical one?

Not for timekeeping or timing; quartz chronographs are more accurate. Mechanical chronographs cost far more, starting well above $1,000 from major Swiss brands, and appeal for their craft rather than their precision.
