Father's Day Watch Gifts

Most fathers own one watch and have worn it for years. A Father's Day watch is the chance to give him the one he would never buy himself. Here is how to choose it, and how siblings can split the cost.

Ask a father what he wants for Father's Day and the answer is usually "nothing" or "a quiet afternoon". Look at his wrist and you often find the same watch he has worn for ten or twenty years, scratched, on its third strap, and still running. That combination is what makes a watch such a good Father's Day gift. He does not need one, so he will never buy one, and the one he has proves he will wear whatever ends up on his wrist for a very long time.

This guide is evergreen, not tied to one year, and organized around four kinds of dad. Each section has one watch we would choose and an honest alternative from an established brand.

The dad who dresses up for family occasions

Weddings, graduations, the restaurant for his birthday. He owns a good jacket and he wears it, but his only watch is a sports watch that looks wrong with it. A dress watch on leather is the answer, and warmth suits most fathers better than cold steel. The Lucky Fours Atlas at $79.99 has a rounded octagon case in rose gold tone with a white ribbed dial, on a brown leather strap. The shape is the cushioned octagon of the expensive steel sports watches of the 1970s, but on leather and in a warm tone it becomes a dress watch. It also comes in plain steel versions if rose gold is too much for him.

A leather strap has another advantage for a gift: it fits almost any wrist without a trip to the jeweler. The alternative from a heritage brand is the Timex Waterbury Classic 40mm at $149, a 40mm quartz watch on leather with a plain, readable dial.

The dad who likes a bit of gold

Some fathers grew up when a gold watch meant you had made it, and they still like the look. Gold tone has moved on since then: the best versions now pair it with a bold dial so it reads as confident rather than flashy. The Lucky Fours Prague at $89.99 is a gold tone chronograph with a black panda dial, white subdials on black, on an integrated bracelet. It looks like a 1970s chronograph that has been kept in a drawer and polished for the occasion. Steel and blue versions are available for a dad who wants the shape without the gold.

From an established brand, the Timex Q Continental 39mm Gold Tone at $199 is a 39mm gold tone watch with a green dial and a day and date display. Our guide to gold watches for men has more options and explains what makes gold tone look rich rather than brassy.

The practical dad

He fixes things, coaches the team, drives the long legs of the road trip. He wants a watch that reads at a glance, times things and survives a weekend in the garage. A chronograph on a steel bracelet does all three. The Casio Edifice Chronograph at $165 is the established pick: a 40mm steel chronograph with a blue dial from a brand that built its name on durable watches. At a lower price, the Lucky Fours Voyager at $79.99 offers a chronograph with a black dial in a gold tone case on a brown croc pattern leather strap, the dressier end of practical.

The dad who already has a watch he loves

This is the hardest dad to buy for, and the easiest to get wrong. Do not replace his watch; add a second one in a different role. If his watch is a steel sports watch, give him the dress watch. If it is a dress watch, give him something he can wear to the beach without worrying about it. A second watch also means his favorite one gets a rest, which he may appreciate more than he says.

The Lucky Fours Valois at $79.99 is a steel sports watch with a dark blue dial and bezel that makes an easy second watch: different enough from a dress watch to earn its place, plain enough to wear with anything.

From the whole family

If several children are buying together, the budget changes. Pooled money can reach a watch with a long mechanical pedigree. The Seiko 5 Sports at $350 is an automatic sports watch with a 42.5mm case and a blue dial, from a line that has been the default first mechanical watch for generations. The Bulova Marine Star Chronograph, listed at $500, is a 45mm chronograph with a rotating bezel for a dad who likes a big watch.

There is another way to use a family budget. Lucky Fours sells buy one, get one free with mix and match, so siblings can give Dad two watches, say a dress watch on leather and a steel sports watch, for the price of one. Or a son can buy a matching watch for himself in the same order, which some fathers find more touching than any gift. Check the store's terms for how a mixed pair is priced.

Getting the size right

The easiest trick is to borrow the watch he already wears. Note its size, and if it is on a bracelet, measure the inside of the closed bracelet. A new bracelet is shortened by removing links, which any jeweler will do in a few minutes; keep the removed links in the box in case his wrist changes. If borrowing is impossible, a leather strap watch removes the problem entirely. Our guide to giving a watch has more ways to find a size without asking.

Holiday weeks are busy for every store, so check current shipping times before you order, and read the return terms in case Dad would rather have a different color: Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms. And when it comes to the card, tell him why you chose it. For a father, the story is half the gift. When he eventually stops working, a watch is also the traditional retirement gift, so this may not be the last one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Father's Day watch?

One that fills a gap. If he owns a practical steel watch, give him a dress watch; if he owns nothing, a versatile steel watch on a bracelet. Gold tone and leather are popular choices for fathers who dress up for family occasions.

How much should I spend on a Father's Day watch?

Anything from about $80 to a few hundred dollars is common. Siblings who pool money can reach a heritage brand watch, or use a buy one, get one free offer to give Dad two watches for the price of one.

How do I find my dad's watch size?

Check the model of the watch he already wears and look up its case size, or ask Mom. If you cannot find out, choose a watch on a leather strap, which fits most wrists without any adjustment.

When should I order a watch for Father's Day?

Earlier than you think. Shipping times vary by store and get longer around holidays, so check the store's current delivery estimates before ordering, and leave a few days spare for a bracelet to be sized.
