With $200 to spend, most men buy one watch. We think many would be better off with two that do different jobs. Here are the pairings that make sense, the maths behind them, and the single watches that beat any pair.

Here is an argument most watch guides avoid, because it does not suit a list of ten products: a man with $200 is often better off buying two watches than one. Not two of the same, but two that do different jobs, a steel watch for the week and something on leather for the weekend, or a quartz watch you never have to think about and an automatic you enjoy thinking about. Two watches also last longer than one, because each spends half its life in a drawer. We make the case below, then do the honest thing and name the single watches that beat any pair.

A watch spends its life on your wrist next to your clothes, and no single design looks right with all of them. The steel sports watch that suits a polo shirt looks clumsy with a dinner jacket; the thin dress watch that suits the jacket looks fragile on a hike. Most men solve this by buying a compromise watch that looks acceptable everywhere and great nowhere. Two watches let each one be uncompromising.
There is a practical case too. Bracelets stretch and straps crack mainly from constant wear, so splitting your wearing time between two watches roughly halves the wear on each. And with quartz watches running for years on a battery, a watch sitting in a drawer for a week is no trouble at all. We develop the full idea of a rotation in how many watches do you need.
What makes pairs especially sensible right now is pricing. Lucky Fours runs buy one, get one free with mix and match, so you pay for the more expensive watch of the two. Every pairing below costs less than $200, most of them much less.
This is our favorite pair, because the two halves suit two different moods. The Lucky Fours Spine at $149.99 is an automatic in a steel octagonal case with an open dial, a watch to enjoy: you can watch the movement at work through the dial. The Fortuno is its opposite, a quiet steel quartz watch with a sunray dial and day and date that you can grab on a Monday morning without setting anything. Together: $149.99.

The most traditional pair. The Caspian, Lucky Fours' best seller, is the steel watch: integrated bracelet, ribbed dial, nothing to look after. The Atlas is the leather one, a rounded octagonal case in rose gold tone on a brown strap that looks right with a jacket and loafers. Both are $79.99, so the pair is $79.99. If you prefer a big name on the leather half, the Timex Waterbury Classic 40mm at $149 plus a Caspian comes to roughly $230, a little over budget but a very good pair.
For men who fly a lot, two sports watches with rotating bezels make a useful set. The Lucky Fours Imperial has a two colour bezel in the style of the classic travel watch, on a five link bracelet. The Baretta is a dive style watch with a green bezel and dial. Both are $129.99, so the pair costs $129.99. The Imperial is quartz and has no separate second time zone hand; if you need one, the Timex Marlin Quartz GMT 40mm does it for $249.

If your weekdays are formal and your weekends are loud, pair a racing chronograph with a dress watch. The Vantage has a white panda dial and black tachymeter bezel; the Nassau has a white dial with Roman numerals on a fine bracelet. Pair cost: $129.99. These two share a white dial, so they look like a deliberate set rather than two random purchases.
Not every pair has to come from one store. A Timex Expedition Scout 40mm at $95 for the outdoors and a Lucky Fours Oceanus at $79.99 for everything else come to about $175. You lose the offer, but you gain a genuinely rugged field watch with a backlight and a steel watch with an octagonal bezel and textured blue dial. It is the pair we would suggest to someone who camps.

Two watches are not always the answer. If you want the stopwatch to be the point of the watch, buy the Casio Edifice Chronograph at $165: it is a proper steel chronograph from a brand that makes very good ones, and no pair under $200 includes anything as functional. If what you want is a respected name on the dial, buy the Timex Q Continental 39mm at $179, a 39mm steel day date with real heritage behind it. And if you can save a little longer, a single mechanical watch from Seiko, the Seiko 5 Sports Black and Gold at $315, is a better automatic than anything in this guide. We explain that step in the best watches under $300, and the full head to head with the Timex and Casio is in the best watches under $200.
If your life has two distinct settings, buy two watches. The Spine and Fortuno pair costs $149.99 and gives you an automatic for pleasure and a quartz for reliability, which is as close as $200 gets to a complete collection. If your life has one setting and you want one excellent tool, buy the Casio.

If you will wear the watch in very different settings, two watches that each suit one setting usually look better than one watch asked to do everything. If you care most about a movement or a brand name, one better watch is the right call.
You add two watches to the cart and pay for the more expensive one; mix and match means they can be different models. Check the store terms for the current details. We explain these offers in buy one, get one free watches.
For function, the Casio Edifice Chronograph at $165. For a classic steel day date from a big name, the Timex Q Continental 39mm at $179.
